The System
What is a landing zone?
The spot where your chip or pitch should land so it rolls out to the hole. ELZS gives it as a carry distance, in paces, from your ball.
What's a "pace"?
One normal walking step — about a yard. Pace off your number toward the hole and you're standing in the middle of your landing zone, the Zero Zone.
What does the percentage mean?
How much of the shot is in the air. 47% means the ball flies 47% of the way and rolls the other 53%.
How do I know the green speed?
Ask the pro shop or the superintendent for the day's stimpmeter reading. Slow is 8 and below, Fast 9–10, Super Quick 11–12 and Ultra Fast 13–15. Most public courses run around 8 to 9.
Which clubs and distances are covered?
Ten clubs — 60°/58° lob wedge, 56°/54° sand wedge, 50°/49° gap wedge, pitching wedge, 9- through 5-iron, and hybrid/5-wood/3-wood — from 5 to 50 yards.
Why does ELZS start at 5 yards?
Hole locations are usually set at least 5 yards (about 15 feet) from the edge of the green.
Playing & Rules
Does the golf ball matter?
The charts were calibrated with three-piece golf balls, which spin and release more consistently around the green. Use the same type when you practice and play.
What about uphill and downhill shots?
The charts assume a flat landing area. On slopes, tiers and elevated greens, adjust your red carpet. A built-in slope setting is in development.
Will every shot finish next to the hole?
No system makes you perfect — ELZS makes you accurate. Land inside the red carpet and you're playing for a short putt. Land in the Zero Zone and you're looking at a tap-in.
Can I use ELZS during a round?
The Chartbook is a printed personal reference you consult during play, much like a yardage book. Rules on electronic devices and reference materials can vary by competition, so check with the Committee before using the app in an event.
The App & Chartbook
Do I need both the app and the Chartbook?
No. They use the same system. Many golfers learn with the app and carry the Chartbook on the course.
Is the app free?
The ELZS app is free to download on iPhone and Android.
