How we chose
These are the best public-access courses across Nevada's main golf regions: Las Vegas, Mesquite, Lake Tahoe and Reno. We weighed course quality, rankings from Golf Digest, Golfweek and GOLF, and variety of price and style. Facts were checked against course websites and golf media in October 2026. Shadow Creek is included because MGM Resorts hotel guests can book it, and private clubs are listed separately.
1. Shadow Creek
Location: North Las Vegas, NV · Access: Resort (guests of participating MGM Resorts hotels only) · Holes: 18 (par 72) · Designer: Tom Fazio (1990) · Region: Las Vegas Valley
Shadow Creek has been No. 1 in Golf Digest's Nevada ranking since 1991. It is No. 3 on Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Public Courses (2025-26) and No. 14 on GOLF's Top 100 Courses You Can Play (2024-25). Fazio and Steve Wynn built a forested, water-fed landscape from flat desert north of the city.
Only guests of participating MGM Resorts hotels can request tee times, and they do it through the hotel. If this round is the goal, book the room first. Our Las Vegas guide covers what else to play on the trip.
Around the greens: On a once-in-a-trip round, get the day's green speed from the staff and hit a few practice chips before you tee off.
2. Cascata
Location: Boulder City, NV · Access: Public (caddies and carts required) · Holes: 18 (par 72) · Designer: Rees Jones (2000) · Region: Las Vegas Valley
Cascata climbs a rocky mountainside southeast of Las Vegas. The front nine plays uphill, the back nine plays down, and a waterfall runs to the clubhouse. Golfweek ranked it second among Nevada's public-access courses in 2024. Golf Digest puts it 74th on America's 100 Greatest Public Courses (2025-26).
Cabot now manages Cascata, and every group plays with a caddie. Tee times open up to 120 days ahead.
Around the greens: Cabot calls the greens fast, and the slopes are steep. Read the lie and the fall line, then land the ball shorter than you would on flat ground when chipping downhill.
3. Wolf Creek Golf Club
Location: Mesquite, NV · Access: Public · Holes: 18 · Designer: Dennis C. Rider · Region: Mesquite, northeast of Las Vegas
Wolf Creek is routed through canyon terrain. Golf Digest ranks it 59th on America's 100 Greatest Public Courses and fifth in Nevada (2025-26). It finished third in Golf Digest's 2001 survey of the best new upscale public courses.
Expect a long, demanding day: the club itself says rounds will likely top five hours. It also closed for most of September 2025 to overseed, so check dates if you plan a fall visit.
Around the greens: Flat lies are rare on canyon terrain. Note whether the ball sits above or below your feet, then move your landing spot to match the slope.
4. Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course
Location: Stateline, NV · Access: Public (seasonal; lodge guests book first) · Holes: 18 (par 72) · Designer: George Fazio (1968), renovated by Tom Fazio · Region: Lake Tahoe South Shore
Edgewood is the only Nevada course to host a USGA championship, including the 1985 U.S. Senior Open. It has hosted the American Century Championship every year since 1990. Golf Digest ranks it 83rd on America's 100 Greatest Public Courses and ninth in Nevada (2025-26).
Pine-lined fairways lead to a finish along the lake. The 2026 season ends October 17, and the course reopens in May 2027. Public tee times open 60 days ahead, with earlier access for lodge guests.
Around the greens: Golf Digest notes the ball flies about 10 percent farther above 6,000 feet. Expect lofted pitches to carry a little longer than at home, and pick a landing spot that allows for it.
5. Wynn Golf Club
Location: Las Vegas, NV · Access: Public (Wynn hotel guests can book further ahead) · Holes: 18 (par 70) · Designer: Tom Fazio (2005; redesigned with Logan Fazio, reopened 2019) · Region: Las Vegas Strip
Wynn sits right on the Strip, on the site of the old Desert Inn course. The 2019 redesign added eight new holes. Golf Digest ranks it 67th on America's 100 Greatest Public Courses and seventh in Nevada (2025-26).
The par-70 card has six par 3s and water on 12 holes. Capital One's The Match was played here three times.
Around the greens: With water near so many greens, pace control matters more than spin. Read the speed on the practice green before you tee off.
6. Incline Village Championship Course
Location: Incline Village, NV · Access: Public (seasonal) · Holes: 18 (par 72) · Designer: Robert Trent Jones Sr. (fully renovated 2003) · Region: Lake Tahoe North Shore
Golfweek tied this Robert Trent Jones Sr. course for sixth among Nevada's public-access courses in 2024. Golf Digest ranks it 15th in the state (2025) and credits its renovation to Kyle Phillips.
The 2026 season runs May 8 to October 18. A cart path project started September 8, 2026, and the course is offering reduced fees through season's end. Public tee times open two weeks ahead, and Incline Village pass holders book through a separate portal.
Around the greens: Most visitors arrive without a feel for these greens. Ask the golf shop how fast they are running, then set your landing spot before your first chip.
7. Coyote Springs Golf Club
Location: Coyote Springs, NV · Access: Public · Holes: 18 · Designer: Jack Nicklaus (2008) · Region: About an hour north of Las Vegas
Coyote Springs is No. 9 on Golfweek's Best 2026 list of courses you can play in Nevada. Golf Digest named it the second-best new public course of 2008, behind Chambers Bay.
The course offers separate resident and non-resident booking. If you continue toward St. George, our Utah guide covers courses across the state line.
Around the greens: Golf Digest panelists point to undulating, sloping greens and valley wind. Keep chips low and let the slope feed the ball toward the hole.
8. Reflection Bay Golf Club
Location: Henderson, NV (Lake Las Vegas) · Access: Public · Holes: 18 · Designer: Jack Nicklaus (1998) · Region: Las Vegas Valley
Jack Nicklaus built Reflection Bay on the shore of Lake Las Vegas, and five holes run along the water, including the finish. Golf Digest ranks it 14th in Nevada (2025-26).
Nicklaus returned to revise the course in 2015. Generous fairways make it a comfortable round for mixed groups.
Around the greens: On the lakeside finish, miss on the land side. Choose a landing spot that keeps the ball away from the water, even if it leaves a longer putt.
9. Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
Location: Las Vegas, NV · Access: Public · Holes: 54 (three 18-hole courses) · Designer: Pete Dye · Region: Northwest Las Vegas Valley
The Las Vegas Paiute Tribe's resort has three Pete Dye courses: Snow Mountain, Sun Mountain and the Wolf. The Wolf plays to 7,604 yards, which the resort bills as the longest in Nevada, and has an island green at the 15th. Golfweek ranked the Wolf eighth among Nevada's public-access courses in 2024.
Three courses in one place suit groups. Clark County residents get a seven-day booking window with Nevada ID.
Around the greens: Snow Mountain alone has seven holes with water. When a chip must cross it, use a lofted club and land the ball on the green.
10. LakeRidge Golf Course
Location: Reno, NV · Access: Public · Holes: 18 (par 71) · Designer: Robert Trent Jones Sr. (1969) · Region: Reno
LakeRidge sits less than five miles from downtown Reno, which makes it an easy round for visitors to the city. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed it in 1969, with Robert Trent Jones Jr. also credited on the plans.
Its best-known hole is the par-3 15th, played from a rocky ridge 140 feet above Lake Stanley to an island green. At 6,715 yards from the back tees, it suits most players.
Around the greens: Recent player reviews (fall 2026) describe soft, wet turf. On soft ground, chips release less, so land the ball closer to the hole than usual.

Tips for playing golf in Nevada
- Southern Nevada is a year-round golf state; Tahoe is not. Edgewood and Incline Village both close in mid-October and reopen in May.
- Play summer rounds in the early morning. Desert afternoons are extremely hot around Las Vegas and Mesquite.
- Check for fall overseeding. Wolf Creek and other desert courses close for parts of September; confirm dates before booking.
- Plan for altitude at Tahoe. Golf Digest notes about 10 percent more carry above 6,000 feet, which affects pitches as well as drives.
- Carry your ID for local rates. Paiute, Coyote Springs and Incline Village all verify residency or passes.
- Warm up first. Try our 15-minute routine for a new course.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best public golf course in Nevada?
Shadow Creek is Nevada's top-ranked course you can play, at No. 3 on Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Public Courses (2025-26). Access is limited to guests of participating MGM Resorts hotels. With no hotel requirement, Cascata, Wolf Creek, Edgewood Tahoe and Wynn Golf Club are the next tier.
What is a good value golf course in Nevada?
Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort gives you three Pete Dye courses on one property, with resident rates for Clark County locals. Angel Park in Las Vegas adds two Arnold Palmer courses and a lighted short course; see our Las Vegas guide. Incline Village posted reduced fees for the end of its 2026 season.
Can the public play Shadow Creek?
Only through an MGM Resorts hotel stay. Shadow Creek reserves tee times for guests of participating MGM properties, who request them through the hotel. Book the room first, then ask for a tee time early, since availability is limited.
When is golf season in Nevada?
Around Las Vegas and Mesquite, golf runs all year, with spring and fall the most comfortable and summer best played early. Lake Tahoe courses run roughly May through mid-October. In Reno, check each course's winter schedule before you plan a cold-season round.
How do I handle unfamiliar green speeds on a new course?
Ask the pro shop for the day's Stimpmeter reading, then roll a few chips on the practice green. On faster greens, land the ball farther short of the hole; on slower greens, carry it closer. Our green speed guide explains the adjustment.
Find your landing zone on every green
From high-altitude greens at Lake Tahoe to desert targets ringed by water near Las Vegas, Nevada's courses roll at very different speeds. Green speed changes where every chip should land, and it changes from course to course. ELZS (Essential Landing Zone Systems) turns three inputs, your distance to the hole, your club and the green speed, into the number of paces to land the ball so it rolls out to the hole. It was built by former teaching pro Chaz H. Smith and comes as an app for iOS and Android and as a waterproof pocket chartbook. Before your next round, ask the pro shop how fast the greens are running, then look up your landing zone and chip with a plan.
