How we chose

Every course here takes public tee times, confirmed on its own website or its operator's site in October 2026. We ranked them by course quality, design pedigree and published recognition from Golf Digest, GOLF Magazine and Golfweek. We also spread the list across southern Utah, the Wasatch Front and the Wasatch Back. Private clubs are listed separately at the end.

1. Black Desert Resort

Location: Ivins, UT · Access: Resort (non-guests can book) · Holes: 18, plus a bonus 19th · Designer: Tom Weiskopf, completed by Phil Smith (2023) · Region: Southwest Utah (St. George area)

Black Desert was Tom Weiskopf's final design, finished by Phil Smith after his death, and it opened in 2023. Golfweek's Best 2025 ranked it No. 1 among Utah courses you can play, and Golf Digest placed it second in Utah overall for 2025-26. It hosted Utah's first PGA Tour event in more than 60 years in 2024, plus an LPGA event in 2025.

Black lava rock frames the holes, and the course reaches 7,500 yards with a bonus 19th hole. It is a premium-priced resort, and Visit Utah notes the round includes food and drink, a forecaddie, a cart and the range.

Around the greens: Lava fields frame the greens, so miss on the safe side and leave a chip with green to work with.

2. Sand Hollow Resort: Championship Course

Location: Hurricane, UT · Access: Resort (open to the public) · Holes: 18 · Designer: John Fought and Andy Staples (2008) · Region: Southwest Utah (near Zion)

GOLF Magazine ranked Sand Hollow No. 1 in Utah and No. 54 on its Top 100 Courses You Can Play for 2024-25. Golf Digest ranks it 10th in the state for 2025-26. Three of its holes have appeared on Golf Digest's list of America's 100 greatest holes. It plays 7,315 yards from the back.

Several holes play along a cliff edge. The resort also has a 9-hole Links Course and a Wee Course.

Around the greens: If you add the treeless Links Course, its large, undulating greens reward picking a landing spot and letting slope do the work.

3. Soldier Hollow Golf Course: Gold

Location: Midway, UT · Access: Public (Utah State Parks) · Holes: 18 (36 on site) · Designer: Gene Bates (2004) · Region: Wasatch Back (Heber Valley)

Soldier Hollow's 36 holes were completed in 2004 beside the 2002 Winter Olympics venue above Midway. The Gold hosted the 2012 U.S. Amateur Public Links, using 17 of its holes and one from the Silver. Golf Digest ranks it 14th in Utah for 2025-26.

The Gold can stretch past 7,700 yards. The Silver course is a par 72 with six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s.

Around the greens: Utah State Parks calls the Gold's greens trickier than the Silver's, so spend extra time on the practice green.

4. Copper Rock

Location: Hurricane, UT · Access: Public · Holes: 18 (par 72) · Designer: Dale Beddo (2020) · Region: Southwest Utah (near Zion)

Copper Rock opened in February 2020 in Hurricane. Golf Digest ranks it 15th in Utah for 2025-26. It has hosted the LPGA's Epson Tour.

The scorecard reaches 7,227 yards, and a lake separates the 9th and 18th fairways. It pairs naturally with Sand Hollow for a two-round day in Hurricane.

Around the greens: On a newer course you have not seen, hit a few practice chips to learn how far the ball releases before you trust a landing spot.

5. Thanksgiving Point Golf Club

Location: Lehi, UT · Access: Public · Designer: Johnny Miller · Region: Wasatch Front (Utah County)

Thanksgiving Point is a Johnny Miller signature course that stretches to 7,714 yards from the back. Golfweek's Best 2025 ranked it No. 8 among Utah courses you can play. It has hosted the Web.com Tour's Utah Championship, the Utah Women's Open and the Utah State Amateur.

It is one of the longest public tests within easy reach of Salt Lake City and Provo. Pick a tee box that fits your game.

Around the greens: Longer approaches mean more missed greens, so a reliable chipping plan saves more strokes here than on a shorter course.

6. Hideout Golf Course

Location: Monticello, UT · Access: Public · Holes: 18 · Region: Southeast Utah (San Juan County)

Hideout sits in the Four Corners region and ranked No. 3 among Utah's public-access courses in Golfweek's Best 2024. Links Magazine credits Forrest Richardson with expanding an original nine into the current 18. The course takes online tee-time requests.

It is a long drive from the Wasatch Front, so plan it as part of a southeast Utah road trip.

Around the greens: On any sloped lie, land downhill chips shorter and uphill chips longer (see our slope chipping guide).

7. Coral Canyon Golf Course

Location: Washington, UT · Access: Public · Holes: 18 (par 72) · Designer: Keith Foster (2000) · Region: Southwest Utah (St. George area)

Keith Foster's Coral Canyon opened in 2000 and plays about 7,200 yards. Links Magazine reports it became the state's most popular public course, and new owners reinvested in it in 2020. It tied for 10th among Utah public courses in Golfweek's Best 2024.

The club markets itself as a tournament venue and lists a 2026 senior amateur event. It suits golfers who want a full-length desert round without resort pricing.

Around the greens: A 7,200-yard card means longer approaches and more chips, so check green speed on the practice green first.

8. Sunbrook Golf Club

Location: St. George, UT · Access: Municipal (City of St. George) · Region: Southwest Utah (St. George area)

Sunbrook is one of four courses run by the City of St. George, and the city books tee times online. Golfweek's Best 2024 ranked it seventh among Utah public courses. Bridges, water hazards and elevation drops shape the holes, with red rock and mountain views.

It is a strong value next to the resorts. The city also runs Dixie Red Hills, its first course from the mid-1960s, plus Southgate and St. George Golf Club.

Around the greens: Elevation drops leave sidehill and downhill chips; play the slope first, then pick your landing spot.

9. Wasatch Mountain State Park

Location: Midway, UT · Access: Public (Utah State Parks) · Holes: 36 (Lake and Mountain courses) · Designer: William H. Neff (Lake Course, 1967) · Region: Wasatch Back (Heber Valley)

Wasatch Mountain has two 18-hole courses. The gentler Lake Course opened in 1967 with eight lakes and ponds. The Mountain Course, finished in 1998, climbs about two miles up the mountain on its front nine. Utah State Parks calls them some of the most affordable and scenic courses in Utah.

It is the value play in the Heber Valley, a short drive from Soldier Hollow. Carts are mandatory on the Mountain Course.

Around the greens: At about 6,000 feet the ball carries a little farther, so take care not to fly chips past your landing spot.

10. Hobble Creek Golf Course

Location: Springville, UT · Access: Municipal (City of Springville) · Holes: 18 · Designer: William F. Bell (1967) · Region: Wasatch Front (Utah County)

Hobble Creek sits in Hobble Creek Canyon above Springville and is run by the city. William F. Bell designed it in 1967. It measures 6,406 yards but plays longer than the card suggests, according to Links Magazine.

A creek crosses several holes, including the 2nd, 12th, 13th and 17th. It is a strong budget round in Utah County.

Around the greens: The city aerates and sands the greens in mid-October; on freshly sanded greens, land chips a little farther on.

Tips for playing golf in Utah

  • Follow the season. Northern Utah courses are often snow-covered in winter while southern Utah stays playable. Golf St. George in the cooler months and the mountains in summer.
  • Account for altitude. Mountain courses like Wasatch Mountain sit around 6,000 feet, where the ball flies farther than at sea level.
  • Check tournament closures. Black Desert closes to all play for several weeks around its fall PGA Tour event. Check the resort's calendar before booking.
  • Book state park tee times early. Soldier Hollow opens tee times up to 10 days in advance.
  • Combine trips. Southern Utah's courses pair well with a Las Vegas trip. See the best golf courses near Las Vegas.
  • Warm up for a new course. Use our 15-minute pre-round routine to read the practice green before your first tee shot.

How do I handle unfamiliar green speeds on a new course?

Ask the pro shop what the greens are rolling at on the stimpmeter, then hit a few chips on the practice green before your round. Faster greens need a shorter landing spot; slower greens need a longer one. Our green speed guide explains how to adjust.

Find your landing zone on every green

From greens set among lava fields near St. George to mountain greens at 6,000 feet, the courses on this list play very differently around the hole. Green speed changes where every chip should land, and it changes from course to course. ELZS (Essential Landing Zone Systems) turns three inputs, your distance to the hole, your club and the green speed, into the number of paces to land the ball so it rolls out to the hole. It was built by former teaching pro Chaz H. Smith and comes as an app for iOS and Android and as a waterproof pocket chartbook. Before your next round, ask the pro shop how fast the greens are running, then look up your landing zone and chip with a plan.
